Program Description

Highly talented and motivated students are invited to apply to our Honors Classical Chamber Music Program. This program has limited enrollment and students are chosen to participate based upon teacher recommendation and audition. Our mission is to bring together students like you from diverse cultural backgrounds and provide you with a challenging college-level experience. Campers should be prepared to practice hard in order perform the difficult music that our chamber music faculty will challenge you with!


  • For Pianists and String musicians, entering grades 7-12, ages 12-17. (qualified younger students may apply)
  • For Pianists and String musicians, entering grades 7-12, ages 12-17. (qualified younger students may apply)
  • If you study privately, then you should be studying highly advanced repertoire, including technical studies. Pianists should be working on Beethoven Sonatas, Chopin Etudes, or equivalent repertoire.
  • Your music teacher will be asked to submit a recommendation for you.
  • An audition demo, 10-minute maximum. All auditions must be submitted as a high -quality video file or a YouTube link. Send your demos to: youngmusicianscamp@gmail.com
  • Specific Requirements for auditions: Two representative solo works of contrasting styles that demonstrate your technical facility, tone, and interpretation from the standard classical repertoire. An additional, optional live audition may be scheduled, however you must first submit your online demo
  • After you are accepted, you will be assigned 2 pieces of chamber music that have been especially selected for you. Participants are expected to download the music and LEARN THEIR PART FLUENTLY BEFORE THE CAMP SESSION BEGINS. NOTE: THIS IS A REQUIREMENT IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM.

8:45 DROP OFF at the Frost School of Music
9:00 - 10:00 ENSEMBLE
  • Piano Duet Ensemble: Pianists are grouped in pairs to study duets and duos.
  • Orchestra: Our conductor is simply awesome!
10:15 - 11:15 ENSEMBLE A continuation of the Ensemble class, with the addition of subjects such as: sight reading, audition preparation, conducting, and technique.

11:30 - 12:00 LUNCH (Lunch is included in the camp tuition)
In the UM Cafeteria, you will be able to select from the grill (hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries), salad bar, pizza, hot meal of the day, and the deli. Fresh fruits, desserts, and beverages are all included.
12:15 - 1:15 ELECTIVE
  • Songwriting and Composition: for students who have some experience either writing songs (music/lyrics) or instrumental compositions. Campers work in groups according to their style (pop song, classical instrumental, jazz, rock…)
  • Classical Piano Master Class: an opportunity to be coached on your solo repertoire.
  • Intro to Improvisation: for strings, winds, and pianists - no experience necessary! In today's musical world, classical musicians are called on to improvise
  • Digital Sound Design: explore digital editing, mixing, and mastering techniques, using the software Logic Pro 10. Students will be encouraged to write, record, and produce an original composition using these techniques. (for students new to Logic Pro 10 and for those experienced in using it)
1:30 - 2:30 MUSIC THEORY
  • Music Theory - Fundamentals: Master the basics!
  • Music Theory - College Prep: Students who have been accepted to the Frost School of Music cannot enroll in the first semester of Music Theory unless they pass a Theory Fundamentals Exam. Other college music programs have similar requirements. This class will help you prepare for this! Topics that will be covered: Intervals and Scales, Major and Minor Key Signatures, Triads and Seventh Chords, Meter and Rhythm, and Harmonic Progression, Hearing Chord Progressions, Solfege and Sight Singing and Basic Part Writing. (Pre-Requisite: knowledge of Theory Fundamentals)
  • All of the theory classes above use the innovative Frost School of Music experiential model, which incorporates ear training and improvisation.

Other Options

Private Lessons and 6th Period Classes 

Private lessons given by our camp staff may be scheduled after regular dismissal. We suggest 60 minute lessons for this age and level.

Dorm Program

For Middle School and High School Campers, ages 11 and above

Are you from out of town? (Or do you live in Miami but want to see what it's like to go to a sleep away camp?) Our full-time program is open to campers ages 11 and above. Coordinated by our amazingly talented Dorm Counselors, you will spend lots of time playing music and hanging out with kids like you who are seriously into music, plus enjoy fun camp activities too!


After the camp classes are over for the day, you are met by your dorm counselor. You go back to the dorm to rest and relax until dinner. All dorm campers go to dinner together, and then after dinner our counselors plan various activities. Each activity is supervised by one of our (totally awesome) counselors. All campers receive a pass to use the UM Wellness Center (on-campus fitness center with an indoor pool, racquet ball, indoor track, etc.). Campers can also use the evening time to get their practicing in. We have fun activities such as: jam sessions, game night, scavenger hunt, and more... On the weekend, we use our bus to take us to places like the beach, the movies, bowling, and ice skating!


HOW MUCH DOES THIS COST? The cost is TBA (A non-refundable housing fee is required at the time of registration to reserve your room. This deposit will be applied to your housing balance.)

WHAT DOES THE DORM ROOM PROVIDE AND WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING? The dorm is air-conditioned and there is free WIFI. There is a communal bathroom on the floor. There is one floor for our boys and one for our girls. Sheets and towels are provided (bring a pillow and light blanket). There is a laundry room and the camp provides laundry detergent, so that you can wash your clothes. After you register for the Dorm Program, we will send you our complete Dorm Packet with what to bring, health forms, and dorm program rules.

WILL I HAVE A ROOMMATE? Everyone has a roommate. We will match you up with someone close in age or if you come with a friend, you can request to be roommates.

WHO ARE THE COUNSELORS? Our counselors are college students or college graduates. They are in charge of what you do after our camp classes are over for the day. They are all musicians too - so they arrange our jam sessions, can help you with your songwriting/composition assignments, will remind you to get your practice time in, and more! They can give you an inside look into what it's like to be a college music major!


Bus Transportation

Bus transportation to the camp, located on the campus of the University of Miami in Coral Gables, is provided by a private bus company. Honors Program participants may sign up for the morning bus, however, this program ends at 5:00 pm, which is one hour later than regular dismissal. A late afternoon bus MAY be offered if there is sufficient enrollment.

How to Apply
Enrollment is limited for this program. You will be notified of your acceptance after the camp receives ALL application materials: Online Registration, Application Fee, Teacher Recommendation, and Audition Demo. Your full deposit (plus the dorm deposit if you are staying in the dorm) is due after receiving your acceptance letter.
  • Review the Daily Schedule to learn about the classes offered, and choose your elective.
  • The Camp will email our "Teacher Recommendation Form" to your music teacher. This is to confirm that you are in the correct level. Make sure you know the e-mail address of your school or private music teacher before you start to register.
